GAA News 05-03-12

It was hard to take For CIT as their fierce rivals UCC snatched their 41st Fitzgibbon cup by one point after extra time. Our own, John Cronin was involved in the semi and the final of the competition, where he chipped in two points in both games. It was a shame, in having put in two outstanding performances (especially in the final) that he didn’t get to receive a convened all-Ireland medal; however he should be proud of his efforts he had put in. It is a great sign of this club that we can produce players of this caliber, a fantastic example and role model to all the younger players who look up to him. Well done John. The ‘Cash for Clobber’ took place and by all counts was a good success for the club. We like to thank everybody who participated in this – which is raising vital funds for the development for the club. Our first team footballers had no game at the weekend, which was a shame considering matches are badly needed for Tim Mulcahy’s crew, as a lack of match practice, training and organization was clearly evident from the few games they have played. Let’s just hope, they can pull themselves together, to put in some kind of decent effort in this years championship.

Lisgoold 0-4 (4)

St.Catherines 1-14 (17)

At Ballynoe

27th February 2012

Last week on a dry Monday night – It was back to the drawing board after this heavy defeat to the men from Ballynoe (which was their first team). They dominated from start to finish on a very heavy Ballynoe pitch. Lisgoold had started brightly as Dave Barry, Moss Mulcahy, Mikey Savage and Denis O’Brien got going from the first whistle. Dave Barry was first to chip a point over but the St.Catherines boys took over, and piled up the scores. Cian Scannell was the sole reply to the onslaught, as Patrick Connery, Cathal Cashman and Kieran Barry, did their upmost to hold out the attacks that were coming through. It was 0-10 to 0-2 at half-time.

It was a formality in the second half as the game peeped out; both sides emptied the bench, as ‘the saints’ strength in depth showed. Sub Damian Clifford manage to squeeze over a good score as well as John O’Shea who raised the white flag, but Catherine’s held out comfortably and managed to raise a green flag with 5 minutes to go to put a bit of gloss on the score-line. It was a mis-match, but our players were defiant to the end.

Team: Edward Geary, Robert Smart, Noel O’Riordan, Kieran Barry, Seamus McSweeney, Patrick Connery, Bill Whelan, Mikey Savage, Cathal Cashman, Denis O’Brien, Dave Barry, Maurice Mulcahy, Finbarr Brosnan, Paul O’Brien, Cian Scannell.

Subs Used: Damian Clifford, John O’Shea, Anthony McCarthy, Mike Scanlon, Andrew O’Donovan

Scorers: Damian Clifford 0-1, Dave Barry 0-1, Cian Scannell, 0-1 John O’Shea 0-1.

Referees

Our congratulations to Jer O’Connell on the weekend for officiating another final. Jer took charge of the Ryan cup final, which saw Tralee IT vs Mary Immaculate College Limerick battle it out for the honours. (Which is colleges hurling second tier competition). Jer, who had pretty much a flawless performance, will (hopefully) be at the big stage again this year during the summer months. Our congratulations also go to Moss Mulcahy on making the Munster referee panel for Ladies Football. Moss along with Gavin O’Brien are now officiating at this level and because of this, we now have 3 referees officiating outside of county level which is a phenomenal achievement for this club. Keep it going lads.

GAA News 27-02-12

A tough weekend for the first team as they were beaten by Ballyclough, while our second team had a good win against Killeagh. Our second string have been told they will do battle with last years champions in the Junior C Hurling Championship Last years winners will be seen as a very tough battle, and one can hope manager Mike Mulcahy will have the second string hurlers ready for battle. Our Under 21′s will have Dungourney in the B Football Championship, the hurling draw yet to be announced. All in the club would like to wish John Cronin the very best as he will be involved with CIT in the Fitzgibbon Cup this weekend. Remember, the Clash for clobber is on this Wednesday night in the community hall.

Junior Football Div 1

Lisgoold 0-12 (12)  Ballyclough 3-17 (26)

At Mallow 26th February 2012

Our first squad were comprehensively beaten by a far superior Ballyclough team in Mallow GAA grounds. To be fair this was far better performance, by our lads but unfortunately the opposition were far better from the last day as well! Ballyclough who were unlucky to be relegated back to junior from Intermediate A grade, showed a hunger and desire to make a surge back to the higher grade this year, with a powerful, passionate and classy performance. It is fair to say that our management did not have there best 15 available, (due to injury, work and player commitments to other teams) they could only muster 18 personnel who did their upmost throughout the hour. Ballyclough started very well and raced out of the blocks with a few good points by Colm O’Neill and Pat Hennessy. Lisgoold stormed back with Kevin O’Shea, Jer O’Connell and the very impressive Cian Scannell chipping scores over, with Gary Stack being an excellent target-man. Our backs were doing fine with Cathal and Andrew in particular standing out, as they held their own. A lack of concentration came after a long distance free came off the post which resulted in a green flag been raised for the north cork men. We were excellent in bouncing back and whittle down the score to a point, (one was a fantastic score form the far touchline by Jer) which made the score 1-7 to 0-9 to the hosts.

The second half was a different story, Ballyclough upped their game a gear and our lads found it hard to keep them out. Colm O’Neill showed why he seen to be one of the best footballers in the county by kicking some splendid scores and be involved two goals (yet again mistakes made in defence). It was a harsh lesson handed out considering the first half went so well for Lisgoold, but Ballyclough powered their way to a fourteen point win. With sub Paul Stack and Cian Scannell (who had a fine game) getting our scores in the second half.  Our lads can keep their heads high as the first half was much better than the whole 60 minutes given against Liscarroll, also with a few new players blooded in; a lack of experience was evident throughout the hour. Manager Tim Mulcahy had this to say “We have to take this on the chin, they are a very good side, and while it is disappointing to lose by such a margin, we had a couple of good performances today especially by some of the younger players. We just need to get our full squad back training, and become available for matches as we build up for championship.” So a tough day in the office for our lads, and our search for the first win in this league continues.

Team: Ciarán Cronin, Andrew O’Donovan, Noel Connery, Cathal Cashman, Kieran O’Shea, Jamie Hurley, Denis O’Brien, Eoin O’Riordan, Barry Ahern, Patrick O’Mahony, Jerry O’Connell, Mike Scanlon, Kevin O’Shea, Gary Stack, Cian Scannell.

Subs Used: Paul Stack, Finbarr Brosnan, Maurice Mulcahy.

Scorers: Cian Scannell 0-4 (0-1f), Kevin O’Shea 0-3 (0-1f), Jer O’Connell 0-3 (0-2f), Paul Stack 0-1, Kieran O’Shea 0-1.

Junior Football Div 3

Lisgoold 3-8 (17) Killeagh 0-8 (8) At Killeagh 21st February 2012

Our second string recorded their first league points for the 2012 campaign with a good win over Killeagh last Monday night in a chilly but calm evening in well laid Killeagh pitch. In where a solid display from the backs, was complimented by a lethal full-forward line (coincidentally all are from Kerry!!) for the hour as we put in a good performance. We seemed to be influenced by the world of soccer across the water as the veterans like Paul Scholes coming from the backroom team to play a role for the team; this has proven to be inspirational and moral boosting for the club he is playing for. The same can be said for last Monday, as the ageless wonder Seamus McSweeney played like an energetic minor at wing-back and was one of the many positives taken from this game. We started brightly with a few quick points from Gary Stack, with our backs were holding firm, (Patrick Connery and Kieran Barry) – Lisgoold were playing well.

Our first goal came from Mike Scanlon, who acrobatically scored a back-heel goal; he shortly followed this up with another good goal, which put us in the driving seat. It was tit for tat then, as Killeagh tried to get back into it, but our defence had the experience of Noel O’Riordan and Seamus to steady the ship. With Kieran O’Shea and Denis O’Brien chipping over scores and Mikey Savage and Cathal Cashman at midfield, we were keeping Killeagh at bay. Manager Barry Ahern made a few changes to freshen up the side, and was duly awarded for his changes as Jamie Woods scored a scorcher of a goal to seal the points on offer. Overall it was a good performance and a big improvement overall from the Cloyne game, one can hope they can build on these foundations for greater things. Manager Barry Ahern had this to say “It’s nice to get the first win under the belt, and we added a few fresh faces which made a difference. It was great to have 23 players available and one can hope that this will be continued for the rest of the year. We have a two tough games coming up against St.Catherines and Russell Rovers, which is both their first teams so it will be a good marker as how good we are with the two strongest teams in the league. As for tonight, I’m just happy to be able register our first win of the year”.

Team: Edward Geary, Robert Smart, Noel O’Riordan, Kieran Barry, Seamus McSweeney, Patrick Connery, Bill Whelan, Mikey Savage, Cathal Cashman, Denis O’Brien, Dave Barry, Kieran O’Shea, Finbarr Brosnan, Gary Stack, Mike Scanlon.

Subs Used: Jamie Woods, Paul Stack, John O’Shea

Scorers: Mike Scanlon 2-4, Jamie Woods 1-0, Gary Stack 0-2, Denis O’Brien 0-1, Kieran O’Shea 0-1.

Referee: Christy Hennessy (Youghal).

Junior Football League Division 1

Lisgoold 1-4 (7)

Ballyhooly 0-13 (13)

Our Junior first team made the long trek up to ballyhooly for their first encounter in the avondhu/imokilly football league. Very few knew what was going to happened in the hour ahead, was surprised many was the performance and the result. Lisgoold were (as the scoreline suggests) soundly beaten by the men from Ballyhooly. In a performance that was way below from the standard our lads produced last year, our squad were given a lesson in teamwork, shooting and usage of the ball.. Not all was bad from this as it was the first game of year, also new blood was bred into the team it is now we would like to welcome Gary Stack to the club, who marked his Lisgoold debut with a good goal. While our back divison did their upmost for the hour, our forwards were a let-down as they could muster five scores in the hour. One can hope that as it was the first encounter that we can only improve form here, for the long season ahead..

Team: Ciaran Cronin, Charlie McCarthy, Noel Connery, Kieran O’Shea, Conor Walsh, Jamie Hurley, Denis O’Brien, Eoin O’Riordan, Alan Conroy, Patrick O’Mahony, Jer O’Connell, Barry Ahern, Jamie Woods, Gary Stack, Kevin O’Shea.

Victory Social 2011

Last Saturday night, we saw a very strong attendance at Fota House Hotel for our victory social for the 2011 season. It was a marvellous organised occasion, in a spectacular setting. One must pay tribute to the organising committee of Norma Woods, Hillary O’Shea, Catherine O’Connell, Eoghan Heagrty, Jer O’Connell & Noel O’Riordan for organising such a excellent evening. Guests were treated to a lovely meal, while our esteems chairmen of our three clubs within the parish spoke. These were Eoin O’Riordan (junior club), Con McCarthy (ladies club) & Dermot McCarthy (juvenile club). Our guest speaker, East Cork board chairman Michael O’Brien thanked us for the invite to the dinner and preceded in giving his best wishes for the year ahead.

Medals were handed out to our victorious winnings teams. (Junior Ladies and the Under 21’s) Then, there were awards handed out to John Cashman for his part in the Cork Under-17 squad and to John Cronin – who had an excellent year, with being involved with the Cork U21’s (who won the Munster title)  and capped it with a wonderful performance in the county senior hurling final. Unfortunately, Carrigtwohill were not to be denied that day but John’s performance was seen by many as one of the more outstanding ones that day. Ella Ryan received an award for her part with the Cork Senior ‘B’ Team, who won last year’s all-Ireland. Leanne Woods got one for achievement in winning the east cork skills competition for 2011, also Jer O’Connell was recognised with an award for refereeing the Munster minor hurling final; one can hope that this will be a stepping stone to bigger things for Jer…

John Joe Regan gave a memorable, insightful and lively speech which was in tribute to the guests of honour for the evening, the 1961 Junior Football championship winning team. All members of that victorious panel who are still present or were represented on the night were given a token of appreciation for their efforts to rapturous applause. Afterwards we saw the very popular hell for leather, playing to the small wee hours. One can only assume after such a frantic and wonderful night that there a lot of sore heads (and bodies!!) come Sunday morning!!!

Club News

This Saturday night, we will be going wild at Fota House Hotel for our victory social for 2011, which is in conjunction the ladies football club. Both clubs had a very successful year, with the junior ladies team winning their 1st ever east cork championship, and were very unlucky to lose out in the county final later on in the year. Our junior footballers got to the East Cork Junior A Football Final, (which must be noted was a magnificent achievement in its own right) this again was a club first but, unfortunately it didn’t go our way. Also the under 21’s did the double in hurling and football. Plenty of success was achieved last season and let’s hope more of the same for this year. Also the winners of the long puck (both men’s and women’s sections) will be presented with their prizes on the night as well. So roll on Saturday night for what will be a most memorable occasion.

Imokilly/Avondhu Football League

This league has been established on a trial basis. We have been drawn in section 1. Lisgoold will find themselves up against the following:

  • Aghada
  • Ballyclough
  • Ballyhooly
  • Carrignavar
  • Erins Own
  • Kilshannig
  • Liscaroll

Our first game is up against ballyhooly (away) on the 19th of February at 3pm. hopefully it will be a good start to a great year.

Championship Draws 2012

Last Wednesday saw the 1st round draws for the east cork championships take place in Midleton GAA club. Facebook, Twitter, Text messages, email and even Morse code was used to spread the word as the names came out of the hat. Lisgoold ended up being paired with Midleton in Football and St Itas in Hurling. Midleton will be a very tough prospect considering their superior fitness levels, however with the experience and guile available between players and management, we hope they can give ‘the magpies’ a run for their money. St.Itas will be a right dog-fight, and one should recall two years ago as they edged Lisgoold out at the same stage by 2 points in a wind-swept evening in Ballinacurra. One can hope we will be able to turn the tables this time around. Everyone in the club will wish the players and management the best of luck in this year’s championship.

Also, before the draw was made that evening, it was announced that there will be an Avondhu/Imokilly football league starting very soon. Eight Teams from Imokilly have shown interest in this league, (we being one of them) and fixtures should be known in the coming future.
